Ethnic Minority Cancer Awareness Week (EMCAW) is taking place between the 6th and 12th of July 2009. The theme for this year is increasing awareness and early diagnosis of cancer among ethnic minority communities and groups. The week is organised by a collaboration of leading charities and are aiming to work in a number of cities across England. The overall aim of our campaign is to maintain the momentum of this event and ensure that cancer awareness amongst ethnic minority groups remains a priority through out the year.
The initiative was launched by Cancer Equality at their ‘Delivering Equality in Cancer Care-A Challenge for All’ conference in 2007. Following this conference, Cancer Equality formed an alliance with a group of leading cancer charities, who have come together to deliver a week of events to raise cancer awareness and improve access to services amongst ethnic minorities.
Jennifer Layburn, management member of Cancer Equality, is the Chair of this alliance. This is the second year of our initiative. In both years, the events were funded by the National Cancer Action Team.
